The town of Chinook is located in the semiarid corner of southern Alberta.
The area has become known as the "Palliser Triangle". The driest
area of the Canadian prairies.
See the
"Palliser Map" on the Glenbow Library page.
Explored by Captain John Palliser during the years 1857 to 1860. Palliser
declaired the area "unfit for human habitation". His report, which also
stated that the rest of the prairies were actually pretty good farm land,
helped convince the British goverment not to renew the lease to the
Hudson Bay Company. In 1870, the North West Territory was acquired by the
Dominion of Canada and administered from the newly formed province of Manitoba.
On September 1, 1905, Alberta, named for Princess Louise Caroline Alberta, fourth daughter of
Queen Victoria, became a province of Canada with Edmonton as its capital city. The province of
Alberta was created by joining the District of Alberta with parts of the districts of Athabasca,
Assiniboia and Saskatchewan.
All I have collected about Chinook is a set of maps. I will add more as I can find or create it. Click on the map to see a closeup. |
